Does anyone remember those Throckmorton Street Art Fairs on The Strip a few years back? That little patch of street between what is now Sue Ellen’s and the clothing store Outlines and what is now Zini’s would be blocked off to host a very small version of an arts festival. It was more on the quaint side than it was say Deep Ellum Arts Fest like. Although we can’t say for sure, that may have been the reason we don’t see it anymore.

But there’s a new festival kid in town and perhaps he can pick up where its predecessor left off. The Cedar Springs Merchant Association will be hosting its first street arts fest Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. We are surprised that they are only making it a one day affair but perhaps they just need to get their feet a little bit wet with this one. But we like the idea. In fact, with such an array of talent and vivaciousness, Oak Lawn should have a significant arts festival in its fold. And with their First Wednesday events each month, the CSMA definitely has the experience in setting up street fairs.

Now that the date is set, now comes the work. The CSMA is now on the search for artists to participate as well as community partners and businesses to help make it kind of a big deal.“The CSMA is currently negotiating with sponsors to bring a strong presence and sense of permanence for an art fest in the community,” said Scott Whittall, President of the Cedar Springs Merchants Association.  “We welcome artists, vendors, and the community to see what the people of Cedar Springs have to offer. It also coincides with Gay Bingo, so expect to have a lot of fun on the strip.” It at least sounds like they want it to be a big deal which is important to the future of this event as a mainstay.

In addition, funds raised by the festival are going to “an Oak Lawn beautification project.” We’re not really sure what that means or the specifics by which project but seemingly the festival has good intentions. Their press release says, “to help raise money for the beautification efforts, artists are asked to donate a small percentage of their sales and an auction item.  The CSMA will sell a loyalty card rather than charge an entry fee to the festival, which will provide a discount at participating merchants.” Hopefully more details this “beautification project” will be revealed as the fest gets closer.
