One year later, Guerilla Gay Bar has managed to grow into a local phenom bar experience. Not to mention they have a gajillion members on their Facebook page (while we have 64…sigh) and pics from their nights out look slammin’ fun and crowded to the doors. GGB also came at an interesting time in Dallas. Obama was on the campaign trail, So was Hillary. Gay marriage was an issue gathering steam. Then we saw the birth of local activists Queer Liberaction and Join the Impact Dallas. On our best days, we like to throw our hat in the name game as well because Hint of Mint started just after all those. GGB is part of this new positive gay movement in Dallas and how they have succeeded.

Tonight they are heading to Victory Park for some full gay on gay celebrating and to blow out one big candle for their year-old birthday. Here’s the word:

Well boys and girls, can you believe it was a year ago that we started this little project? We’ve had a blast, turned a few heads, and seen some cool bars and some dingy dives. All in all, a HOT MESS of a success.

Well, it’s time to celebrate. This month be prepared for something…not quite typical. We are going into the belly of the beast this time (Ed. note – they sure have)…that’s right, it doesn’t get any straighter than HOOTERS. We have chosen the west end location, supposedly the largest Hooters in existence they say.

No theme this month, unless you want to wear a cute little birthday hat!! We want you to start showing up at around 7:30, but this is a come and go event, so grab a small group to shorten your wait for a table, and keep the rotation going for folks that want to get in behind you. Probably a good idea NOT to come with a party of 12, or you’ll be waiting a long time.

Our spillover location this month will be right next door at Dick’s Last Resort. So Dick’s or Hooters…your choice!

Happy Birthday to US!

Cheers Queers,

Guerilla Gay Bar HQ

We offer you GGB’ers well wishes on your first birthday and appreciation for being an exciting positive light in the community as well as for being sort of a brother to Hint of Mint. Or sister? Or non-gender specific sibling? Ugh…PC-ness…can’t get away from it.

One of our resolutions is keeping on top of our calendar. It’s hard! But for we’ll be putting this down for Saturday. It’s not news that Queer Liberaction has had this on the schedule for a while but we like to give fresh little reminders.

In order to send a message to the future president, Liberaction will take part in the Nationwide Defense of Marriage Act Protest this Saturday at

Saturday, January 10 at 11:30 am

Historical Plaza behind Records Building

509 Main St. in downtown Dallas

While the official protest is set to happen across state capitals around the nation, protests such as these allow those of us who can’t make the jaunt down to Austin to still actively participate in the politically charged event. Join the Impact has organized the national protests whereas Queer Liberaction has taken it upon themselves to organize this event in Big D.

With all the stuff Join the Impact is up to and our willingness to help spread the word, Hint of Mint should just move into their fold. But we also like doing the music and entertainy stuff. So we’ll keep our support for the organization by spreading the word of what they are up to.

And one thing would be this coming Saturday’s event. They’ve been busy with protests of late but they want to stress this ain’t no protest. Merely a candelight vigil for the spirit of the season. So head over to the Galleria for the Light Up the Night for Equality early evening Saturday.  Here are the official deets.

On Saturday, December 20th, JoinTheImpact.com asks that you join again for a nationwide rally. Candlelight vigils will be held at commercial centers in cities across the country in remembrance of the rights that once were for 18,000 marriages, and in honor of the rights that one day will be again – for everyone.

Where:

The Dallas Candlelight Vigil will be held outside the Galleria and want to stress we are not protesting, especially the Galleria.  Many locals and tourists will be passing by as they carry on a 26 year tradition of visiting the Galleria during the holidays for their shopping needs. This is a peaceful candlelight vigil in the spirit of the holidays.

We will line both sides of the street on Alpha Road (from the Tollway to Noel Road) from 5:00pm to 6:30pm.  At 630pm, we will all go inside to warm up at the Starbucks (ed note: you SO got to try the Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate) located near Macy’s before we call it a night and leave as a group or finish our last minute Christmas shopping.
When:

5:00 to 7:00pm – Please arrive by 445pm and park in the Alpha Parkway Plaza parking lot north of the Galleria (North of Alpha and East of the Tollway) – not the Galleria. We do not want to negatively impact any of the parking issues for the Galleria or Alpha Parkway Plaza , so please do not take front-row parking for any customers.  There are some vacant store areas-please use those areas.

You will need:

Dress warmly-this is outside.  A messaged t-shirt/sweatshirt, a candle & holder (no flashlights) and a few dollars for coffee.

TShirt Messages: 1st Class Taxpayer-2nd Class Citizen, Equality for/4 All, Equal/= Rights for/4 All.

Order T-Shirts by Dec 12th: You can purchase Tshirts on www.JoinTheImpact.com if you order by December 12th to ensure delivery by 19th.

OR print your own graphic onto Iron-on material (you can check out JTI’s store graphic tab or make your own message & iron on material is available at almost any store like WalMart).

T-Shirt Making Party Dec 19th: The night before, many of us will be making our own shirts from 6:30-900pm at the Resource Center of Dallas at 2701 Reagan St, Dallas in the Blue/Yellow room.  Please bring a blank T-Shirt or Sweatshirt and RSVP below so we know how many to expect.

For The Candlelight Vigil, Please RSVP by December 16th at one of our page and check for there for any updates:

So there’s that but then I found this nifty idea on their site. They want the GLBT community of America (and you GLBT friendlies too) to send President Elect Obama a postcard for the holidays. We thought this was a pretty rad idea. Check it out:

SEND OBAMA A POSTCARD FOR EQUALITY BEFORE CHRISTMAS!

Our friends at LGBTQ Civil Rights Front have come up with a brilliant way for us to ensure that LGBTQ issues aren’t forgotten as President-elect Obama makes his transition into the White House.

Their idea: buy a postcard from your home town, include a handwritten message, and mail it to Obama’s Presidential Transition Office.

Keep up the momentum! Get the suggested message and transition office mailing address here. Then post a photo of you and your card here!

Man, there is lots going on. Arts, music, blah and blah. Where to begin?

How about America’s Best DJ? Dubbed that by DJ Times, DJ Christopher Lawrence hits Dallas this weekend over at the Lizard Lounge. Full Access is putting on the show and is offering you a chance for a free round of drinks. Read the flyer. This might be a good time to take all the friends should you win. You’ll be totally popular for the night.

Our fab activist buddies, Join The Impact is hosting a movie night this week over at the Angelika. Saturday night they invite you to join them in watching Milk starring Sean Penn in a most likely Oscar nominated performance. Get to the theater on time as they catch the 5:15 showing tomorrow. The Angelika is located at Mockingbird Station, 5321 Mockingbird @ the NE corner of Central and Mockingbird.

If you can’t make that and end up laying low, might I recommend the documentary The  Times of Harvey Milk. In a one word review – fascinating. Totally worth the time to check it out. Perhaps Tapelenders or Premiere Video or Movie Trading Company will have it. Plus, it should probably be required viewing for all GLBT peeps.

The always reliable Buddies II will be hosting quite the holiday weekend. Tonight will be A Twisted Christmas with the Dukes of Dallas. I’m a little skeerd of what that could entail because those dukes can be pretty twisted. The show starts @ 10:30 p.m. And then tomorrow is their Dance Party Night. Buddies II sports one of the best dance floors and sound systems in the city so get your dancing shoes on and head there Saturday.

Of course, you know about tonight’s Guerilla Gay Bar.

Tonight is also Space Rampage over at Hal Samples’ studio in Deep Ellum. His one night only event with cheap art, good food and drinky drink. Plus, it’s Samples’ last party for the year and it looks like he’s going out of 08 with some bang. Not only all of the above will be on hand for party attenders, he’ll also have special musical act, reggae/jazz/dubmaster Aton. He says tonight will be “A VARIETY OF LIVE MUSIC,VISUAL ART, PERFORMANCE ART, VIDEO, AND LOVE TAKING PLACE… all in the same SPACE.” Totally check it.

Also tonight (whew!) is local band The Bright over at Sue Ellen’s. Booking director Jennifer snagged a star of a band shaking up the usual lineup a bit. The Bright is on the up and up. Why? Oh, perhaps because a tune of theirs may have been featured on The Hills. OK, whether they blow up because of that is uncertain but by no means does it hurt their chances. Bravo to Sue Ellen’s.

Tomorrow, you art lovers should not miss Art Conspiracy4 by any means. Local art, local music, fab times can never miss. Now you’ll just have to break out the Mapsco to find it. It starts tomorrow night at 6:30 and boasts 2 DJs, three bands and 150 friggin’ artists. Plus, art auctions begin at a mere $20. Bam! Ten bucks to get in and cash needed for refreshies but bust that plastic out as you snag your new piece of art. Find ArtCon 4 at 3011 Gulden St. in West Dallas.

And finally (we promise), the Turtle Creek Chorale has their annual Christmas concert which should never be missed. Ooops, HOLIDAY concert – my bad, whatev. Me personally is a little miffed that I’ll be missing the show for the first time in ten years. But no doubt the show will go on and greatly I predict. Four performances only and two are on Sunday. Check out Hottest Holidays Ahead by getting your tickets here. And don’t forget to take a toy for their annual drive benefitting Children’s and Parkland Hospitals. Now doesn’t that just make you feel fuzzy and kind? And what a better way to end the weekend?

But Monday’s probably going to be a b*&(@!

We received the following notice from the peeps organizing the Prop 8 Protest this Saturday at City Hall. The Join the Impact movement is sweeping the country with protests in support of the California GLBT community. Dallas’ own protest is this weekend.

Hmmm…Dallas GLBTers have been pretty busy this week, wouldn’t you say?

Dallas TX Proposition 8 Protest Rally

Saturday, November 15th 12:30 to 2:00pm

Dallas City Hall

1500 Marilla St

Dallas, TX 75201

On Election Day of this year while the world celebrated a historical moment, LGBT inequality was being written into the California, Florida, Arizona and Arkansas constitutions.  In California where LGBT people had enjoyed marriage equality since June our rights were ripped away from us over night.

Since the elections, tens of thousands of people have been pouring into the streets throughout California in disgust over the passing of Prop 8.  This Saturday, November 15 at 12:30 PM, we in Dallas will stand in front of City Hall with those in California in expressing our abhorrence of the passing of this hateful measure.

Dallas’ Protest is part of a nationwide day of action against Prop 8. This effort coordinated through the website www.JoinTheImpact.com will take place at exactly the same time this coming Saturday in front of City Halls throughout the country.
