We’re officially sad because this conference looks like one of the most interesting ever. Not only does the Queer People of Color Conference “honor the advances made by queer people of color amid various geopolitical, sociological, and institutional pressures that have informed our individual consciousnesses and the structures of our supporting organizations” but it also has a heck of a lineup of workshops. Here is a sampling:
“Don’t Be a Dick”: Queer phobic Insults
Today’s Queer Asian Cinema
For Faith, For Love, Forever: A screening of the upcoming documentary about the Black Church and Prop 8
“That’s So Gay”
Topics range from politics to pop culture to immigration and the arts. We took note because Queer Control Records mentioned they will be hosting the workshop, The QPOC Unicorn: Where are all the Queer PUNKS of Color? presented by Jeremy Alva, Marlene Melendez, and Jocelyn Wong.If anyone can find out, it’s going to be the peeps at QCR.
Not only is the conference all workshops and caucuses, they also have musicians and entertainment on hand, an open mic and an art gallery. And it should be noted that their keynote speaker is Trinity A. Ordona, Ph.D. who was named one of the 20 Most Influential Lesbian Professors by Curve Magazine. Not too shabby.
Better yet, the conference is freakin’ free! At least according to the flyer. How they can pull that off is beyond us but congrats to them for the accomplishment. The conference runs tomorrow and Saturday over at the University of California @ Davis.
