This is short and sweet but just a reminder of tonight’s event at the Round Up which is pretty much all in the poster.

We happened to find this video though posted just a few days ago featuring peeps from the United Community Against Gay Hate (UCAGH) featuring members of the organization along with Minty friend and activist dynamo Blake Wilkinson from Queer Liberaction, Erin Moore of Stonewall Democrats and Sandra Sanchez with Rockwall County Young Democrats (who knew?). Here they discuss the need to remember Stonewall and promote the upcoming Million Gay March.

The latest move from Queer Liberaction is their call for a national rally against Proposition 8 on Saturday, March 7.  In a dramatic stance, QL will be holding the rally at the landmark Grassy Knoll in Downtown Dallas. And yes, that grassy knoll.

The spark? “On Thursday, March 5 the California Supreme Court is set to hear oral arguments regarding the Proposition 8 case,” their press release says sent to us by QL organizer Blake Wilkinson. Nationwide, rallies will take place in cities across the country beginning at 2pm CST.

Wilkinson goes on to say “Prop 8, the highest funded campaign on social issues in US history rescinded previously won marriage equality rights from LGBT people.  Prop 8 passed on Election Day 2008.  The California Supreme Court will be hearing arguments on a legal technicality regarding whether Prop 8 was a revision to rather than an amendment to the state’s constitution.” He cleverly reminds also that California is often a state where precedents have been set in legal battles such as anti-miscegenation laws.

“We need to have a rally equal to or exceeding the national rallies on November 15th to show them that we are still watching, we are still angry and that we are still fighting!” says Elizabeth Pax, organizer with Queer Liberaction.  Blake Wilkinson, organizer with Queer Liberaction continues, “Marriage is a fundamental aspect of our fight to end our oppression and gain our equality.  It has rarely been so important to take to the streets and fight as it is now.  A united LGBT community across the country will send a clear message to the California Supreme Court that we demand that this hateful ballot measure has no place in a civil society”. (from the press release)

Last week, we received an e-mail from Blake Wilkinson introducing Queer Liberaction complete with their recent accomplishments, mission and founding statements and upcoming calendar. The new organization has made some heavy strides in a short time and Wilkinson is taking the bull by the horns to make QL a force to be reckoned with. Or at the very least a beacon of light and hope for GLBT peeps here and beyond.

So, instead of reprinting the e-mail (cuz it’s long-a$$), we’re giving you some snippets of the letter.

  • Our first event was a protest addressing the Mormon church’s role in the passing of Prop 8.
  • On International Human Rights Day, Queer Liberaction demonstrated outside the Cathedral of Guadalupe in downtown Dallas because of the Church’s opposition to a proposed resolution to the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights seeking to decriminalize homosexuality around the world.
  • had the pleasure of endorsing and attending Israel Luna’s demonstration at Cinemark.
  • This past Wednesday (12/17) Queer Liberaction held its first public meeting where we presented our mission statement, founding statement, and plan of action.
  • the next time we will meet will be on Friday, January 2 at 7 PM.  We will meet at a restaurant and bar called Jack’s Backyard which is located at 2303 Pittman at the corner of Commerce and Pittman in Oak Cliff.  You can find the google map to Jack’s Backyard here.
  • Queer Liberaction Mission Statement

Homophobia is the foundation of queer inequality and oppression.  In order to liberate ourselves from this oppression, we must directly, visibly, and publicly confront it along with organizations, institutions, groups or individuals who support or promote discrimination toward the Queer community. We are a direct action group dedicated to building the Queer civil rights movement in order to secure our equality and end our oppression. We do not ask for equality–we demand it.  We are Queer Liberaction.

  • Coming Events:
