Community will organize this Saturday to discuss opportunities and logistics

Monday, March 16, 2009 – Dallas, Texas: LGBT community members and allies will gather this Saturday at the Resource Center to organize “Remembering Stonewall” – the Dallas LGBT Rights march planned for Sunday, June 28.

Any group that would like to participate is invited to send a representative to an organizational meeting taking place Saturday, March 21, from 1 to 3 p.m., at the Resource Center of Dallas, Blue and Yellow Room, located at 2701 Reagan St., Dallas, TX 75219.

Dallas will be one of 50 locations designated throughout the nation that will serve as official “Million Gay March” events, a grassroots equality network movement started via the website (www.milliongaymarch.org).

“United Community Against Gay Hate (UCAGH) is extremely excited about hosting this major event in our city. We are looking for volunteers from every LGBT organization that wants to participate and help facilitate this huge event,” said Michael Robinson, UCAGH founder. “If you are an organization outside of Dallas and want to participate please contact us by email ucaghc@yahoo.com. We are looking for an event committee member and sub-committee members to organize the event. If you have experience in doing something like this please contact us.”

More details on the march will be coming soon on Facebook (UCAGH) or Michael Robinson http://www.myspace.com/freedomfromhate.

“This is a great opportunity for the DFW LGBT community to show the state of Texas that we’re here, we’re active, and we’re still fighting,” said Tisha McDaniel, march organizer. “I hope ‘Remembering Stonewall’ will encourage people to become more active in issues affecting in the LGBT community.”

June 28 will be the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations against a police raid that took place in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969 at the Stonewall Inn, in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City.

The Stonewall Riots are frequently cited as the first instance in American history when transgender, gays, lesbians and bisexuals fought back against a government-sponsored system that persecuted LGBT citizens.  The Stonewall Riots became the defining event that marked the start of the modern gay rights movement in the United States and around the world.

Official statement from MillionGayMarch.org:  “Over 50 locations across in America and abroad will take place in the largest call to action in history. We are hoping to bring people out of all ages, races, and orientation to stand together as one community to call out for Equality and learn the tools of how to keep fighting in their own backyard.”
